NANS Advocates Suspension Of Unaccredited Courses In Educational Institutions

Date:

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) is urging the Federal Government to take decisive action against educational institutions offering courses without proper accreditation. This call came in response to the Federal Ministry of Education’s suspension of the evaluation and accreditation of degree certificates from the Republic of Benin and Togo.

Approximately 18 institutions faced blacklisting following an undercover investigation by a Nigerian newspaper, exposing a degree mill in Cotonou, a major city in Benin Republic. Elvis Ekundina, the national leader of the union, is calling for a comprehensive investigation into the activities of the Ministry of Education, National Universities Commission (NUC), National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), and other implicated agencies involved in fraudulent practices related to obtaining degree certificates from foreign universities.

Highlighting the urgency of the matter, Ekundina emphasised the need for the government to focus on tertiary institutions, particularly privately-owned ones, that are offering unaccredited courses. He accused such institutions of undermining the education sector and deceiving young Nigerians, leading to financial losses.

Furthermore, Ekundina is advocating for a collaborative effort among the government, NANS, and other student bodies to eradicate illegal tertiary institutions, aiming to reposition the nation’s education sector for substantial improvement.
