Illegal Miners Caused Ibadan Explosion

Date:

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State revealed on Wednesday that initial investigation by security agencies have identified the source of the explosion in the Bodija Area of Ibadan. According to the Governor, the blast was triggered by explosive devices secretly stored by illegal miners in one of the Bodija houses. While ongoing investigation is being conducted, Governor Makinde emphasised that those found responsible will face legal consequences.

In a statement posted on X, he explained, “Preliminary investigation by the security agencies revealed that illegal miners occupying one of the houses in Bodija had stored explosive devices there, which caused the blast. The investigations are ongoing. All those found culpable for this will be brought to book.”

Governor Makinde confirmed two fatalities and 77 injuries resulting from the explosion. He assured the public that the state government would cover the medical expenses of the victims and provide accommodation for those affected until they could rebuild their lives.

Reassuring the public, he stated that rescue operations were already underway at the incident site. “Earth-moving equipment, ambulances, emergency lights, and security were deployed to the scene of the incident. The wounded and injured are being treated and moved to public and private hospitals within Ibadan,” he conveyed.

In the aftermath of the incident, which also affected prominent locations such as the Governor’s Office, Secretariat, Oyo State House of Assembly, and residences in various areas, Governor Makinde urged residents to remain calm. He encouraged them to report emergencies to a designated helpline and stressed the importance of avoiding interference with ongoing rescue operations.
