Ex-CBN Governor Accused Of Fraud In $6.23 Million Case

Date:

The former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, is facing legal troubles as the Federal Government has filed charges alleging he obtained $6.23 Million through false means. The amended charge, presented by Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN) on behalf of the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), includes accusations of criminal breach of trust, forgery, conspiracy, and obtaining money through false pretence.

The charges assert that Emefiele, in collaboration with Odoh Eric Ocheme, obtained the funds in the name of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation. The prosecution contends that he also awarded significant contracts to a company where his wife, Omoile Margaret, and brother-in-law, Omoile Macombo, hold influential roles.

Among the allegations, Emefiele is accused of forging a document titled “Re: Presidential Directive on Foreign Election Observer Missions,” dated January 26, 2023. The proceedings occurred before Justice Hamza Muazu of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Maitama, with the charges of obtaining money through false pretence added to the initial six charges against the former CBN boss.

Emefiele, previously arraigned on November 17, 2023, for conferring a corrupt advantage on a staff member, Sa’adatu Ramallan Yaro, continues to maintain his innocence. Despite pleading not guilty, his defence counsel, Matthew Burkaa (SAN), successfully sought a variation of bail conditions, allowing Emefiele to remain within Nigeria for the trial duration. The Federal Government was fined N100 Million for violating Emefiele’s rights on January 8, 2024.
