NSCDC ANTICIPATES DRASTIC REDUCTION IN SCHOOL ATTACKS IN 2024, SAYS CG AUDI

Date:

The Commandant-General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Dr. Ahmed Audi, has expressed optimism about a significant reduction in attacks on schools in Nigeria in 2024. In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Abuja, Audi shared insights into newly implemented security strategies aimed at addressing the prevalent issue of school attacks.

Audi highlighted the need to tackle the problem fromt its roots; outlining plans to concentrate on background issues contributing to asymmetric conflicts. The NSCDC’s strategy involves non-kinetic approaches, engaging with community leaders, school children, and teachers to raise awareness, and identify suspicious activities.

Audi stressed the importance of citizens providing timely information and alerting the government regarding potential threats, encouraging a collaborative effort to nip the problem in the bud.

Giving the classification of schools as critical infrastructure, Audi mentioned that the NSCDC heads the National Safe School Response Coordination Centre (NSSRCC) located at its headquarters in Abuja. Through the rapid response squad established nationwide, the NSSRCC has successfully thwarted over 48 attempted attacks on schools across the country, Audi reported.

Looking ahead, Audi revealed plans to engage the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) during the first quarter; sensitising them to establish security response centers in their respective states. He emphasised the national interest in promoting safer schools and noted that several states, including Benue, Nasarawa, Rivers, and Kano, have responded positively by providing coordination centres.
