Lagos Warns Against Storage of Inflammable Items

Date:

The Lagos State government has warned Lagosians against the unsystematic handling and storage of inflammable items.

In a joint statement issued by Olugbenga Oyerinde, the commissioner for Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations, and Lanre Mojola, the Director- General, Safety Commission, the Lagos state government affirmed the commitment of Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration to the safety of lives and protection of the citizens from any form of hazards.

Oyerinde said it has now become very important and necessary to alert the public on the need to be more safety conscious; the risks that transporting and handling combustible materials, fuels, chemicals and other dangerous goods possess, are huge, and can lead to quantum loss of lives, property, and litigations if not handled with care.

Mojola, the Director General, in his remarks, said the value for lives that will be lost in an explosion can not be quantified. He disclosed that the commission has commenced a ‘Safety For You’, campaign, which is aimed at making safety a priority for every Lagosian. This campaign will increase awareness and encourage proactive safety measures in personal, occupational and business contexts.

He noted that our safety and that of our neighbours are both important and they work hand in hand; he then advised members of the public to take responsibility. “When you see something, please say something. An injury to one is an injury to all.”

Mojola noted that stockpiles of chemicals and combustibles carry the risk of explosions and fire outbreaks under excessive temperature and pressure, which is why officers of the commission were going around to ensure everywhere was safe for all and sundry.

He urged artisans and tradesmen to get professional advice when handling combustible goods, and moving them from one location to another within the State.

He concluded by encouraging the public to report stockpiles of any form of dangerous goods to 07000SAFETY or to the nearest security agencies.
