Explosion Shakes Abuja Dumpsite

Date:

A powerful explosion rattled the Maitama area of Abuja, Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT), early on Wednesday. This incident occurred just a week after a tragic explosion in Ibadan, which claimed the lives of five individuals.

Confirming the event, Nkechi Isah, spokesperson for the FCT Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), assured, “There were no casualties reported. FEMA promptly responded, and the FCT police are actively investigating. The explosion originated from a dumpsite.”

However, a statement from the Federal Capital Territory Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Josephine Adeh, countered claims of a bomb explosion. According to the statement, the blast near a refuse dump outside the Bureau of Public Enterprise premises in Maitama, Abuja, was caused by an overheated metal refuse container. This resulted in injuries to two waste evacuators, who are currently receiving medical treatment at Maitama General Hospital.

The FCT Police Command has advised the public to exercise caution and opt for plastic or rubber containers for waste disposal to mitigate the risk of similar incidents.
