Stakeholders to Address Shea Industry Challenges

Date:

The President of the National Shea Products Association of Nigeria (NASPAN), Mohammed Ahmed Kontagora, said the challenges and barriers preventing the nation’s progress towards sustainability in shea production needs to be addressed urgently. He said this at the briefing for the preparation of the “Shea 2024,” scheduled to hold between March 5 and 7, 2024 in Abuja, with the theme: “Bridging the Gap.”

According to the president of NASPAN, Insufficient investment, untapped market opportunities, weak policy frameworks, insecurity, and social inequalities are some of the challenges to be addressed; adding that it is important for the country to identify these challenges, discuss them openly, and work collaboratively to find practical and permanent solutions.

His words: “Over the years, our industry has envisioned a future marked by responsible parkland management, resource conservation, women empowerment, youth engagement, digital transformation, and expansion into new markets. While these aspirations have been the focus of discussions in past conferences, the time has come to move from planning to tangible action.

“NASPAN remains committed to fostering an environment of collaboration and dialogue. We are excited to continue this momentum and contribute meaningfully to the discussions at the upcoming conference. Our expectations are high, and we anticipate that the event will not only showcase success stories, but also provide a platform to share initiatives that have successfully bridged the gap between our industry’s vision and its present reality.”

Kontagora noted that NASPAN, and other relevant stakeholders, are ready to actively be involved in promoting sustainability within the shea industry. All in all, the 2024 Annual Shea Conference is an opportunity for all stakeholders involved to unite, share knowledge, and build lasting partnerships and relationships.
