FG AND MOROCCO DISCUSS ACCELERATING $25 BILLION GAS PIPELINE PROJECT

Date:

The Federal Government of Nigeria has engaged in discussions with the Kingdom of Morocco to expedite the Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline project. This initiative aims to facilitate the Final Investment Decision (FID) on the pipeline, which is estimated to cost $25 billion and will be completed in stages over 25 years. Morocco advocates for prioritising this pipeline over the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline due to security concerns in the latter’s proposed route.

During the discussions, which took place recently, Nigerian Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, met with Moroccan Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Ms. Leila Benali. The talks were facilitated by executives from NNPC Ltd. and the Morocco National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines (ONHYM).

Both parties underscored the strategic importance of the project for Nigeria, Morocco, and the African continent as a whole. The pipeline, with a capacity of 30 billion cubic meters per year, will traverse multiple countries and contribute to regional cooperation and economic development.

The project aligns with Nigeria’s efforts to monetise its gas resources, enhance energy leadership in Africa, and promote economic integration among African nations.
