Presidential Committee Meets With Service Chiefs on Natural Resources

Date:

The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, said security agencies will come up with measures and ways to secure Nigeria’s natural resources. Mr Alake said the move is aimed at preventing a recurrence of the Ibadan explosion, and addressing insecurity in the solid minerals sector.

He made this known at a news conference after the meeting of the Presidential Inter-Ministerial Committee on Securing Nigeria’s Natural Resources in Abuja yesterday. President Bola Tinubu set up the committee on January 17 with the task of producing a blueprint for securing Nigeria’s natural resources, including mineral sites, marine economy, and forests.

The committee’s meeting ended on January 19th, and the minister announced that the committee will be expanded to include key security agencies. He explained that the aim of the expansion is to produce comprehensive security strategies that will be forwarded to the President for appropriate action.

Alake further explained that the inclusion of security agencies into the committee is to help deliberate on strategies for addressing the insecurity due to their expertise in the sector.

“We have deliberated exhaustively, and it’s decided that the security agencies that constitute the experts in this particular venture should meet and give us a work plan on execution of that mandate,“ he said.

He noted that the work plan will include information on the outfits the committee will propose, ways and measures of execution, funding and other associated details. According to the minister, the recommendations of the committee are expected to avert any further reoccurrence of the Ibadan explosion; adding that the government was still awaiting forensic results on the blast.
