Azerbaijan Plans to Relocate Some Azeris to ‘Western Azerbaijan’

The Russian peacekeeping body in Nagorno-Karabakh, Azerbaijan said it had evacuated more than 5,000 people following Azerbaijan’s hostile attack in the region this past week.

As Azerbaijan moved swiftly to regain full control of the region of Nagorno-Karabakh, the territory’s ethnic Armenian population is facing a deeply precarious future.

While Armenians are faced with the dispossession of Artsakh and trying to deal with the tragic consequences that ensued, Azerbaijan is now escalating its demands by launching a campaign in claims that the entire territory of the Republic of Armenia is supposedly ‘Western Azerbaijan.’

The Azerbaijani government has said it has come up with a plan to “reintegrate” the Armenians into the Azerbaijani state following its victory in a one-day offensive, and the surrender of Karabakh’s de facto ethnic Armenian leadership. But Baku, the Azerbaijan capital, still has not offered specifics about what this reintegration might mean, and what its promises to protect the rights and security of its possible new Armenian citizens entails.

Last year more than 200,000 Armenian Christians were forced out of their homes following Azerbaijan’s military offensive on ethnic Armenians; claiming that the territory once known as Nagorno Karabakh does not exist anymore. The government of Azerbaijan said it will dissolve the region at the beginning of the year, that it wants some Azeris to be relocated to ‘Western Azerbaijan.’
