GOVERNMENT SET TO INAUGURATE MINIMUM WAGE COMMITTEE TOMORROW

Date:

The Federal Government is scheduled to inaugurate a tripartite committee to negotiate a new minimum wage for workers nationwide. The current minimum wage of N30,000, signed into law by former President Muhammad Buhari on April 18, 2019, will expire in April 2024 after its five-year tenure.

The committee, in line with the International Labour Organisation (ILO) Convention 131, will consist of representatives from the organised private sector, organised labour, and the government. Its primary task will be to negotiate and agree upon a new minimum wage, which will then be forwarded to the National Assembly for legislation through an executive bill.

Scheduled to convene at the Council Chamber, Presidential Villa, Abuja at noon, the committee aims to ensure a fair and equitable wage based on the prevailing cost of living and socioeconomic indicators across the country. To achieve this, Organised Labour has been actively collecting data on the cost of living in various towns and local government areas nationwide.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has directed its state councils to conduct research and gather comprehensive data on the average cost of living, emphasising the importance of accurate information in the negotiation process. The success of the upcoming negotiations hinges significantly on the thoroughness and accuracy of the data collected.

In preparation for the negotiations, Organised Labour intends to present a demand based on objective data rather than sentiments; ensuring that the proposed wage reflects the economic realities faced by workers across the country.
