AFCON 2023: South Africa Stun 10-Man Morocco To Set Up quarter-final Clash Against Cape Verde

Date:

Morocco became the latest giants to be toppled at a shock-filled Africa Cup of Nations when they fell 2-0 to South Africa on Tuesday. Evidence Makgopa produced a neat finish to score the opener in the 57th minute, surviving a lengthy Video Assistant Referee (VAR) check for offside, and putting Bafana Bafana on their way to a surprise victory over the 2022 World Cup semi-finalists.

Hakimi was afforded a golden opportunity to level when Mothobi Mvala was adjudged to have handled Ayoub El Kaabi’s shot; only to fire his 85th minute spot-kick against the crossbar. Manchester United midfielder Sofyan Amrabat was dismissed in stoppage time before Teboho Mokoena curled a classy free-kick past Bono to confirm the upset in style.

Since becoming the first African side to reach the World Cup semi-finals in Qatar two years ago, Morocco has lost two of 13 matches, and both defeats were inflicted by South Africa. Morocco joins defending champions Senegal, Tunisia, Algeria, Cameroon and Burkina Faso as teams ranked among the top 10 in Africa heading home early.

On Saturday, South Africa will face Cape Verde in Yamoussoukro after hosts Ivory Coast and Mali clash in Bouake. In the other quarter-finals, Victor Osimhen-inspired Nigeria will face Angola, and the Democratic Republic of Congo will meet Guinea on Friday.

South Africa, Ivory Coast, Nigeria and DR Congo are former champions, while the other four title contenders are hoping to conquer Africa for the first time. As for Morocco, which is Africa’s top-ranked side, the team will have to wait until 2025 edition to end its long wait for a second continental title, which stretches all the way back to 1976.
