Tech: Updated Google Maps For Android Now Displays Weather Data

Google has updated its Maps application on Android to display weather and air quality information when using the map layer. 9to5Google say this feature started rolling out on Android in recent weeks, but most Android users should see it now.

The Google Maps app for iOS had this small weather box for quite some time, and so does Apple’s Maps app. It is the type of feature that really makes sense once you have it, and it begs the question: ‘why is it just being added?’

The weather information appears in a small box in the upper left area of the map view, right below search filters. The weather box displays information about the weather, temperature, and air quality, and the data will automatically update when moving to another area.

One can also tap on the box to open a weather card with more detailed information. This is a very simple but welcome addition to an app you may use multiple times a day.

Just last week, Google also announced that it is introducing generative AI to Maps as an experimental feature. In the US, the Local Guides feature can now help you discover new places by just asking what you are looking for.
