FEDERAL GOVERNMENT ADVOCATES FOR EFFICIENT TRANSPORT SYSTEM

Date:

The Federal Government has emphasised the significance of an efficient transport system to the Nigerian economy. Minister of Transportation, Said Alkali, highlighted that such a system would positively impact various sectors like agriculture, food security, marine and blue economy, tourism, industrialisation, manufacturing, and trade, as well as national integration.

Speaking at a two-day ministerial retreat in Abuja, Minister Alkali stressed the need to explore avenues for private sector investment and financing, particularly in light of current government funding constraints. He emphasised the importance of moving beyond theoretical discussions to concrete actions on the ground, advocating for Public Private Partnership (PPP) as a viable financing model.

The minister expressed optimism about the forthcoming Land Transport Policy, anticipating increased international private sector investment in Nigeria’s transportation sector. He underscored the ministry’s commitment to delivering on Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) outlined in agreements with President Bola Tinubu.

The outcome of the retreat is expected to result in a comprehensive implementation strategy covering priority projects and programs outlined in agreements with President Tinubu. Minister Alkali urged the ministry’s leadership to disseminate the retreat’s outcomes to all relevant officers for effective implementation.
