New Fee For Virtual Court Hearings In Lagos State

Date:

Starting from April 1, 2024, the Lagos State judiciary now require a fee of N30,000 for each virtual court session held across the state. This announcement came from Tajudeen Elias, the Acting Chief Registrar of the state, in a circular dated March 28, 2024, as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

The circular outlines that anyone wishing to have a virtual court hearing must apply to the relevant court and pay the fee upon approval. Furthermore, the scheduling of virtual court cases will be handled by the Assistant Chief Registrar on Litigation in Ikeja or Lagos upon receipt of payment.

The circular emphasised that only designated officials are authorised to manage virtual proceedings in Lagos State courts. Internet services for these virtual hearings will be provided by First Hightower Infotech Limited as before.

While commenting on this development, Managing Director of Global T & T New Solutions Limited, Musbau Famuyiwa, highlighted the importance of virtual hearings during the pandemic, noting that they allow court operations to continue while adhering to social distancing guidelines.

Famuyiwa stated that while virtual hearings were initially free, the introduction of a fee would enhance their effectiveness, and aid the justice system. He clarified that payment of the fee is not compulsory, but the option is available to those who find the service beneficial.

Additionally, virtual hearings will now extend to all magistrate courts in the state, with the service charge directed to the company’s account.
