ABIA STATE GOVERNMENT INTRODUCES NEW CONTRIBUTORY PENSION

Date:

Abia State Government is set to introduce a new contributory pension scheme for its civil servants, as announced by Mr. Okey Kanu, the Commissioner for Information and Culture. Speaking at a press briefing following the State Executive Meeting in the Government House, Umuahia, Kanu disclosed that the government has made significant progress in preparing for the transition to the new scheme.

“The state government has concluded plans to introduce a contributory pension scheme for Abia civil servants. The plans for establishing the scheme have gone very far and very soon we would start the cutover to a contributory pension scheme,” he stated.

Kanu emphasised the government’s commitment to streamlining the pension payment process to ensure pensioners feel included. He revealed that the government had directed pension payments to be made on the 28th of each month, aligning with the payment schedule for the state’s civil servants. Additionally, he announced a significant policy change: pensioners would now receive their full monthly pension amount, rectifying the previous practice of disbursing only half.

Acknowledging recent pension arrears disbursements and inadvertent omissions, Kanu mentioned the establishment of a help desk by the Ministry of Finance to address such discrepancies and oversee the resolution of related issues. He stressed that these measures aim to guarantee a smooth and successful process for managing pension payments.

In March, it was reported that the Abia State Government passed a law ceasing pension payments to its former governors and deputy governors. Governor Otti, who has consistently opposed such pensions, emphasised the reallocation of funds to clear longstanding pension arrears for Abia’s retirees since 2014. Governor Otti acknowledged the irony of his future status as an ex-governor, emphasising the prioritisation of public service and arguing for ending these pensions to enhance governance and responsibility.
