FG Launches CNG Conversion Training to Alleviate the impact of Fuel Subsidy REMOVAL

The Federal Government, as part of its Renewed Hope Agenda, has initiated a training program in Abuja for 50 Nigerian youths on converting vehicles and generators from petrol to compressed natural gas (CNG). This initiative aims to mitigate the economic hardships caused by the removal of fuel subsidies.

The Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji, stated that the scheme is part of the celebrations marking President Bola Tinubu’s first year in office. The program is designed to train individuals who will then educate others in the conversion process. Nnaji highlighted a practical example where a CNG vehicle traveled to Ibadan at a significantly lower cost compared to a petrol vehicle, showcasing the potential savings in transportation and logistics costs.

Nnaji explained that the three-day training would be expanded to cover the six geopolitical zones of Nigeria, ensuring broader reach and impact. The materials for the conversion are already available, and the trainees will be equipped to teach others, promoting job creation and economic empowerment.

Dr. Jumamai Tutuwa, the Director General of the Federal Institute of Industrial Research, Oshodi (FIIRO), mentioned that the training program follows the agency’s success at the last Technology Expo. FIIRO aims to train 20,000 youth across Nigeria in CNG conversion, starting with this initial batch in Abuja and extending to the 36 states.

Dr. Tutuwa emphasised that CNG conversion is cost-effective and safe, with strong containers that ensure no risk to users. She expressed confidence that this initiative would significantly reduce the financial burden on Nigerians, especially in terms of transportation costs, following the removal of fuel subsidies.
