Zenith Bank’s Dr. Ebenezer Onyeagwu Named Africa’s Best Banking CEO for Second Year Running

Dr. Ebenezer Onyeagwu, the Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Zenith Bank Plc, has been named the ‘Best Banking CEO of the Year in Africa’ at the International Banker 2024 Banking Awards. This marks the second consecutive year he has received this recognition.

 

The award, announced in the Spring 2024 issue of International Banker Magazine, coincides with Dr. Onyeagwu’s completion of his five-year tenure on May 31, 2024. Expressing his gratitude, Dr. Onyeagwu thanked the publishers of International Banker for the honour, attributing the award to the collective efforts of his team and their commitment to innovation, growth, and sustainability.

 

Dr. Onyeagwu dedicated the award to Dr. Jim Ovia, the Founder and Chairman of Zenith Bank Plc, for his mentorship, as well as to the bank’s management, staff, and customers for their support and loyalty over the past five years.

 

Throughout his tenure, Dr. Onyeagwu has received numerous accolades, including Bank CEO of the Year awards from Champion Newspaper, BusinessDay Newspaper, SERAS Awards, Leadership Newspaper, and International Banker. Appointed on June 1, 2019, he has led Zenith Bank to significant achievements in financial performance, financial inclusion, corporate governance, and sustainability.

 

Under his leadership, Zenith Bank has received multiple local and international awards, such as Best Bank in Nigeria by Global Finance, Best Bank for Digital Solutions by Euromoney, and the Number One Bank in Nigeria by Tier-1 Capital according to The Banker Magazine. The bank has also been recognized for its corporate governance and sustainability efforts by various industry bodies.

 

Dr. Onyeagwu was awarded a Doctorate Degree in Business Administration by the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, in recognition of his contributions to the financial services sector in Nigeria and across Africa.

 

The International Banker Awards aim to recognize financial institutions that excel in providing capital for economic growth, innovation, sustainability, and intelligent investing, setting new performance benchmarks for the industry.
