Nigeria’s Education Faces Daunting Challenges, Says Dr. Frances Osamor


Dr. Frances Osamor, the first black female to earn a doctorate in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of the District of Columbia, highlighted the significant challenges facing Nigeria’s educational system. In her discussion with newsmen, Dr. Osamor pointed out issues such as the shortage of qualified teachers, inadequate infrastructure, and a lack of learning and technological resources. Despite these challenges, she expressed hope for future improvements in the education system.


Dr. Osamor advised the government to prioritize funding for education and ensure the availability of basic necessities like electricity and water. She emphasised the importance of addressing insecurity, improving infrastructure, reducing bureaucratic hurdles, and offering better incentives to teachers and professors. She also stressed the need for transparency within the educational system.


Addressing the issue of brain drain, Dr. Osamor noted that the migration of professionals, particularly academics, negatively impacts the quality of education in Nigeria. She urged the government to find viable solutions to retain professors within the country.


Dr. Osamor revealed her plans to visit Nigeria to assess the education sector and contribute to its development, especially in computer science and engineering. She expressed optimism about the potential for significant improvements and shared her vision of transforming the education system in Nigeria by incorporating successful practices from the United States. She emphasised the importance of creating a comfortable learning environment and utilising her extensive research and experiences to establish a thriving educational sector in Nigeria.
