The final shipment of BVAS (Bimodal Voter Accreditation System) equipment for the general elections of 2023 has been received by the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC).
The voting machines were received by Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of INEC, Festus Okoye, National Commissioners, and senior officials, on Tuesday, in Abuja. The information was released by Festus Okoye, Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee and National Commissioner for INEC.
The INEC delegation was being welcomed at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, according to him, by representatives of the Nigeria Customs Service, the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company, and airport security personnel. “To facilitate the smooth delivery of the machines, the Commission created four airport hubs in Abuja, Kano, Lagos, and Port Harcourt.
“Over the last four months, several flights delivered the BVAS to the designated airports for movement to states of the federation ahead of the 2023 elections,’’ Mr Okoye told newsmen. He said with the arrival of the last consignment in Abuja on Tuesday, INEC has now taken delivery of the required number of BVAS machines for all polling units in the country. He said the consignment included extra machines that will become handy in the event of an emergency.
In order to hold free, fair, credible, transparent, and inclusive general elections in 2023, INEC plans to use technology, and Mr. Okoye appreciates the cooperation of all Nigerians in this effort.
