The Southern African Development Community (SADC) vehemently expressed their collective opposition to a proposed United States law on countering Russian influence and activities in Africa during their 42nd Ordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government, which was held on August 17 and 18 at Parliament Building.
The 16-member regional bloc alleged in a statement on its website that the United States had made Africa “the target of unilateral and punitive measures,” and its Senate’s Foreign Relations Committee(SFRC) pushed the bill to stop President Vladimir Putin from using Africa to evade US sanctions and finance his war in Ukraine, as well as to protect Africans from human rights abuses by Russian mercenaries.
Thandi Modise, minister of defense and veterans affairs for South Africa, recently criticized the US for attempting to intimidate African nations into not doing business with Russia. And declared that all African leaders should oppose the bill.
