The Academy for Women Entrepreneurs (AWE) has collaborated with Ascend Studios Foundation to extend a significant financial boost to returned migrants. A seed fund of $4,200 was provided to support their entrepreneurial endeavors. Among the ten participants, three standout pitches secured seed funds of $2,000, $1,500, and $700; fueling the prospects of their businesses.
The emphasis lies on cultivating an environment that dismantles barriers and fosters women’s holistic engagement in the economic landscape. Julie McKay, the Public Affairs Officer of the American Consulate in Nigeria, underscored the critical importance of this endeavor. Through three distinct cohorts based in Abuja, Lagos, and a specialised programme, over 120 women have been actively involved; benefiting a total of 770 participants. These women received invaluable support through extensive training and mentorship.
Inya Lawal, President of Ascend Studios Foundation, shed light on the focused approach of the specialised cohort. Its prime objective is to address the pressing need for the reformation and reintegration of returned migrants. Beyond financial aid, this initiative, according to the Foundation, provides essential elements such as training, therapy, and networking opportunities. These elements are crucial for enabling sustainable economic growth, ensuring that the beneficiaries can scale their ventures effectively.
Ngozi Attah, CEO of Jaga Beauty Skincare and Skin Clinic, played a pivotal role as one of the judges in this transformative initiative. She highlighted the significance of opportunities like these in helping women overcome potential trauma. Furthermore, she expressed her confidence in the scalability of the ideas presented by the beneficiaries and their potential to make substantial contributions to the economy. This collective effort is a step forward in building a more inclusive and supportive entrepreneurial ecosystem for women; especially for those who have returned from migration journeys.
