The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) made a significant announcement on Sunday; confirming the berthing of the largest container vessel to navigate the nation’s territorial waters at the Lekki Deep Seaport. Mohammed Bello-Koko, the Managing Director of NPA, conveyed this information in a statement released in Lagos.
According to him, the vessel named “Maersk Edirne” measures an impressive 367 meters in length, boasts a breadth of 48.2 meters, and carries a Gross Registered Tonnage of 142,131 metric tonnes. Bello-Koko revealed that the vessel, with a Dead Weight Tonnage of 147,340 metric tonnes and 3,376 total cargo onboard, safely navigated under the guidance of experienced and well-equipped NPA pilots.
This accomplishment is in alignment with the commitments made during the signing of the Presidential/Ministerial Performance Bond in December 2023. Bello-Koko expressed determination to provide leadership and technical guidance to maximise the potential of the marine and blue economy.
Responding to this milestone, Bello-Koko commended Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, for consistent support and endorsement of NPA’s initiatives. He acknowledged the minister’s contributions to employee upskilling, and equipment renewal; crucial factors that facilitated the seamless achievement of this feat.
Bello-Koko emphasised that the Lekki Deep Seaport’s ability to berth a vessel of such magnitude signifies a remarkable advancement; howcasing its readiness to exceed stakeholders’ expectations.
